Saint Joseph’s University Graduates Veterans with Disabilities from Entrepreneurship Bootcamp

Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania concluded its inaugural Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program after a week of on-campus instruction, April 9-17, 2016. Offered in conjunction with Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), EBV is widely recognized as the premier entrepreneurship program for veterans. SJU is one of only 10 universities to offer the program nationwide.

Before arriving on campus for the second phase of the program, the veteran participants completed three weeks of an online, instructor-guided curriculum that provided business fundamentals and helped them structure their business plans.

During phase II, they were provided instruction from SJU faculty members and entrepreneurs on a broad range of topics, including: business planning, financial skills, sales & marketing, accounting basics, government contracting, franchising, human resources and benefits, IT tools, and many others. In all, 47 sessions were held, including lectures, presentations, panel discussions and mentoring workshops.

The week-long event culminated with a “Shark Tank” style venture pitch competition, followed by a graduation reception and ceremony. Prizes were awarded to the top four venture pitches, and each student received a graduation certificate and EBV challenge coin. Honorable Patrick J. Murphy, Acting Secretary of the Army served as the graduation speaker and Mayor of Philadelphia, Jim Kenney, offered congratulatory comments.

All 19 veterans successfully completed phases I and II, and are now in phase III — the business execution segment of the program. IVMF has provided them with a robust suite of in-kind services and mentorships to enable them to jumpstart their ventures and position themselves for success.

The next SJU Cohort of EBV is planned for April 2017.
