SCORE mentors Veterans in the St. Joseph’s University Veterans Entrepreneurial Jumpstart (VEJ) program
WEST CHESTER, PA, November 27, 2016 – Twenty three Veterans with dreams of starting their own business began the St. Joseph’s University 2016 Veterans Entrepreneurial Jumpstart (VEJ) program. These Veterans ranged in age from 28 to 52 and represent five branches of the United States military and many years of service to our country. VEJ offers an intensive three-part program that begins with an online course of study to provide veterans with a foundation in business fundamentals and guidance in developing a business plan. The second phase is a week-long residency that included classroom instruction, guest lectures, panels, workshops, networking and mentoring. In the third phase, the entrepreneurs are partnered with business leaders in a year-long mentorship and are given access to complimentary support services including legal, accounting and tax services, web design and hosting, to kick start their venture.
Chester and Delaware County SCORE volunteers were invited to provide mentorship to these Veterans during the program and to help them plan and present their business idea in the “Venture Pitch Competition” at the end of the program. Birgit Williams, a Veteran and a SCORE client was a winner of the Venture Pitch Competition with her business startup called “75 Fox Trot Construction LLC.” Having worked as a project manager in a family-owned construction business and then completing a Construction Management Certificate Program at Temple University, Williams plans to bid for government construction projects. Winning the Venture Pitch Competition has given her $5,000 in seed money and free in-kind services from a web site developer as well as exposure to training and networking opportunities. “The Veteran Entrepreneur Jumpstart Program was a very enlightening and rewarding experience. I found the speakers very relatable and particularly enjoyed the stories of former graduates and local businessmen. They were very candid and shared obstacles they faced and how they conquered them,” said Williams.
